Spiritual Growth through Study and Prayer

Part of our heritage as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is that we are committed to an informed faith as well as a faith in which we are molded and “formed in Christ.” Through study and prayer we strive to provide a wide range of opportunities to think, question and delve deeply into the mysteries of God, to nurture our spirits in prayer and meditation on the scripture, to hear God’s “still small voice”, and to search for ways to make our faith relevant in today’s world. Our Sunday morning classes are organized in an elective format so that, with each new session, you are free to choose the class which most speaks to you. In addition, below is a list of study and prayer opportunities you can take part in throughout the week and year.

Companions in Christ

This small, spiritual formation group covenants to meet together for 28 weeks and explores, in depth, spiritual practices designed to help members grow in faith and in community with one another. Contact Betty Brickhouse, 846-0120.

Wednesday Morning Study Group, 9:30 a.m. (Parlor)

Study and discussion of Brian McLaren’s book A Generous Orthodoxy: Why I am a missional, evangelical, post/protestant, liberal/conservative,mystical/poetic, biblical/charismatic,contemplative, fundamentalist/calvinist,anabaptist anglican, methodist, catholic, green, incarnational,depressed-yet-hopeful, emergent, unfinished Christian.  Curious? Contact Marilyn Taylor, 385-5822.

Men’s Early Friday Morning Group, 5:50 a.m. (Parlor)

Study based on Albert Winn’s book A Christian Primer: the Prayer, the Creed, and the Commandments. One reviewer states, “Winn opens up these ancient words of the Christian faith (Lord’s Prayer, Apostle’s Creed, Ten Commandments) phrase by phrase and shows how they are relevant to living today.  Many people have memorized these “Big Three” but this author helps us see them in new ways using simple language and insightful stories. If you want to grow in your faith and be challenged to live it out, this is a book for you to read and give to others.”  Contact Mike Walker, 385-9423.

Turner Lecture Series on Life and Faith

Named after a pillar of the church, a man who embodied the character of the thoughtful Christian, John Turner, this lecture series seeks to make our faith relevant in today’s world. This year the lecture will be on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.

Easter Prayer Vigil

Each year following the Maundy Thursday service a prayer vigil is held from 9:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. on Good Friday to remember the suffering and death of Jesus. You are encouraged to participate in this meaningful experience by spending thirty minutes in prayer in the sanctuary. Contact Verna Poats, 384-0901.

Labyrinth

We have explored many ways to pray at FCC and the Labyrinth, an ancient centering tool, has proven to be a moving, centering experience in prayer and meditation. Our large Labyrinth is open several times a year. Our smaller one is open daily in the Hugh Toler classroom.

Tuesday Morning Men’s Study Group, 7:30 a.m. (Parlor)

Study based on Jan Linn’s book The Jesus Connection . “In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in spirituality both in and out of the church. But because there is so much pop-psych spirituality around, it is all the more important that we understand what Christian spirituality really is and how we can practice it in today’s world.”  Contact Bryan Cox, 386-0021.

Christian Women’s Fellowship

Meets once a month for fellowship, study and service.

· Maude Grainger Circle and Kate Montgomery Circle - meets the second Tuesday of the month. Contact Mary Esther Cawthorne, 384-8532.

· Serenity Circle - meets once a month at various time and places. Contact Anne Cooper, 384-7365.

Earthkeepers

Seeking a workable approach to a world in peril because of over consumption and misuse of resources, the group meets monthly to educate its members on the issues and find ways to educate and encourage the congregation to search for a sustainable way of life, respecting God’s creation. Contact Lou Gregory, 384-3810.

Contemplating the Face of Jesus

This moving art collection has blessed our walls for over three years. You are invited to set aside time to follow the path upon which these pictures lead you while reflecting on the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Guide books are available in the Narthex.

10,000 Disciples Praying

An invitation by the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (DOC), Sharon Watkins, to join disciples the world over to pray daily for the Church to live out its vision of becoming a faithful, growing community of believers. Resources can be found at www.disciples.org/10000.
