Spiritual Growth Through Worship & Music

Central to our life together at First Christian Church is Sunday morning Worship. It is during this time together, sharing in weekly communion around the Lord’s table, raising our voices together in praise and reflecting on God’s word that we are filled and renewed so that we may venture forth into the world to share the good news.

About Our Service

The Lord’s Supper

As members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we believe that the Lord’s Supper is central to our common worship. We cannot imagine one of our Sunday morning worship services omitting the sharing of this meal at Christ’s table. While we celebrate our diversity, it is our unity at the communion table that forms us into community. Because of this, our whole service is shaped around our communing with Christ, from the opening call to worship to the benediction and sending forth.

The Role of the Laity

Peter’s first letter states that in Christ’s church - all members alike - are “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.” (1 Peter 2:9) In our baptisms we are united in this “priesthood of all believers.” Thus the laity play an integral role in our worship services. From those greeting at the doors to the worship leader opening with prayer and reading the scripture, to the elders praying at the table and the deacons serving the elements, the lay participation in worship reminds us that we are all “God’s own people.”

Special Services Throughout the Year

Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Prayer Vigil, Community Thanksgiving Service, Christmas Choral Vespers, Christmas Eve Children’s Service and the Christmas Eve Candlelight service.

Chalice Ringers

The handbell choir play periodically throughout the year during the worship service providing special music during Lent, Pentecost and the Advent season. The handbell choir practices on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Contact Cynthia Ramsey, 540-586-6261.

Music at First Christian Church

Music is a critical element of our congregational worship. Whether offered by the choir, the handbell choir, our youth string ensemble or one of our many talented vocal or instrumental soloists, music speaks of God's majesty in ways that words alone fail.

Other Opportunities to Participate in Worship

Chancel Choir

The choir provides special music for the worship service from September through early June. The high point of the musical calendar is the second Sunday of Advent when they offer a special evening worship opportunity through a Choral Vespers program. The choir welcomes new members and invites adults, high school students and college age young people with a passion for singing to join us. The choir practices Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Contact Oeida Hatcher, 528-5386.

Sacred Dance Ensemble

Expressing worship and praise through the movement of the body, the ensemble meets to practice on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. Contact Janet McVey 385-0309.

First Stringers

FCC is blessed with an abundance of musical talent among its youth. The First Stringers is an ensemble of young people who contribute to worship with their musical gifts. This group was formed by the late Gale Weisman who recognized the many talented young musicians in the congregation, brought them together and encouraged their participation in worship. It was Gale's wish that the church continue to support and encourage the musical gifts of the youth at FCC in worship throughout the year.
